Imagine a temple standing quietly on this spot before Johor Bahru had even properly become a city. The Johor Ancient Temple traces its roots back to somewhere between 1870 and 1880, making it one of the oldest constructions still standing in Johor Bahru today. Detailed records from its earliest years are thin, which is fitting for a building that has simply outlasted most of what was ever written about it. Few structures in the city can claim to have watched this much of Johor Bahru grow up around them.

Once a year, this quiet temple becomes one of the busiest places in the city.

The Johor Ancient Temple hosts the annual Chingay festival, held from the first to the fifth day of the first lunar month, drawing crowds for one of Johor's most important cultural celebrations.

For the rest of the year, it stays peaceful, but come festival season, this is where the city's energy gathers.
